RESEÑA PERSONAL
Ian Roustan Espinosa es miembro
fundador del Centro de Biología Molecular (CBM) asociado a la Universidad
Centroamericana UCA. Realizó sus estudios de licenciatura en Biología en la
Universidad de Mobile en San Marcos, Carazo; graduándose con honores en 1999.
Ese mismo año ingresó a trabajar con investigador asistente en el CBM-UCA en el
tema de bioprospección de endonucleasas de restricción. En el Año 2001, realizó
trabajos y especialización en la compañía biotecnológica norteamericana New
England Biolabs, Inc. y desde su regreso formó parte de la facultad de ciencia,
tecnología y ambiente-UCA como docente en Bioquímica, Química general y
orgánica. Desde el 2003 hasta el 2005 realizó sus estudios de Maestría en
Biología Molecular y Celular en la prestigiosa Universidad Alemana
Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg, recibiendo beca del Servicio de
Intercambio Académico Alemán (DAAD). Su trabajo de tesis fue realizado en el
laboratorio del destacado científico Prof. Dr. Renato Paro en el tema de
Epigenética y Biología del Desarrollo. Actualmente es investigador docente en
el Centro de Biología Molecular y miembro suplente de la Comisión de Análisis
de Riesgos para el tema de Biotecnología y Bioseguridad, CONARGEM. Desde su
formación, Ian ha venido trabajando en la organización diversas conferencias y
talleres en biotecnología en el país, siendo uno de sus principales objetivos
el desarrollo de la ciencia y la educación científica en Nicaragua.

Mecanismos silenciamiento y activación génica (Epigenética), Biología de
desarrollo, Relación entre transcripción y silenciamiento. Interferencia de ARN
y formación de heterocromatina, Función y descubrimiento de microARNs, Células
madre y diferenciación celular, Bioinformática, Genómica comparativa y
funcional (aplicandola a estudios de biodiversidad), Biotecnología de Plantas,
Bioprospección.
Ian Roustan Espinosa is one of the founder members of the Molecular Biology Center associated to Universidad Centroamericana UCA. He graduated from the University of Mobile, Latin American Campus in San Marcos, Carazo; obtaining a BSc. in Biology with honors in 1999. Later that year, he started to work as a research assistant in the Molecular Biology Center developing the bioprospection project in endonucleases. In 2001, he worked for New England Biolabs, Inc as a visiting research scholar and after his return to Nicaragua; he was integrated into the UCA Science, technology, and Environment faculty as a lecturer in biochemistry, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. In 2003, he embarked into his MSc. in Molecular and Cellular Biology studies in the renowned University of Heidelberg, receiving the DAAD fellowship. The MSc. thesis was performed in the laboratory of the distinguished Prof. Dr. Renato Paro in the area of Epigenetics and Developmental Biology. Currently, Ian is a research scientist and lecturer working for the Molecular Biology Center-UCA and member of the National Committee for Risk Analysis in the areas of Biotechnology and Biosafety under the Ministry of Agriculture. Since 1999, Ian has been working in the organization of biotechnology conferences and workshops in the country, having as a primary objective the advancement of science, technology, and scientific education in Nicaragua.
Research Interests: Mechanisms of epigenetic gene
silencing and Activation (during development), Relationship between
transcription and silencing, RNAi and Heterochromatin formation, microRNA
function and discovery, Stem Cell and differentiation, Bioinformatics,
Comparative and Functional Genomics (applied to biodiversity studies), Plant
Biotechnology, Bioprospection.
